The IBM PC Compact Printer (model 5181) uses thermal printing technology with an eight-wire head and thermal paper. It has a print speed of 50 characters per second and uses a serial interface at 1200 bits per second, with an adapter available for standard RS232 ports. The printer supports 96 ASCII characters plus some international characters and can print 80 characters per line, with options for compressed, double-width, and compressed double-width modes. It also has a graphics mode capable of 560 dots horizontally at 70 dots per inch vertically and horizontally. Paper feeding is friction-based and supports both rolls and perforated sheets of thermal paper.
