Source Records of the Great War Vol I How the Great War Arose HC
by Charles F Horne, Walter F Austin

A comprehensive source record of World War I. Each volume is a complete narrative in actual words of the chief officials and leaders.

This is the first volume of 7. Horne starts with a summary of the reasons for the war. He debunks the claims that the war was caused by the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip, who was a boy aged 18. Austria was already planning to start what they expected to be a brief and successful invasion of Serbia. Austria was later utterly surprised when Russia pledged to come to the aid of Serbia and mobilized. Germany then declared war on Russia and then attacked France through Belgium. That brought Britain and America into the war.

Red heavy cloth with elaborate gilt decor on front and spine, border rulings on back. Nice frontispiece engraving with captioned tissue guard.

Cover being held by tape.
