Hand-painted Russian nesting doll (matryoshka) featuring Orthodox Christian religious iconography in a traditional Byzantine style. Depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child in rich colors with gold-accented halos and detailing. Carved wooden outer shell has a warm stained finish, with a fully painted nested interior figure.
Front includes a carved and painted cross and dove motif; reverse shows a carved cross highlighted in gold. Base bears hand-painted Cyrillic script identifying the icon subject. Doll opens cleanly at the midline and seats properly when closed.
Height is approximately 7.5 inches. Decorative piece intended for display. A strong example of post-Soviet Russian religious folk art combining matryoshka tradition with Orthodox icon painting.
