MARI KATAYAMA GIFT
Winner of the 45th Kimura Ihei Photography Award

The artist, who had both legs amputated at the age of 9, creates self-portraits and installations using hand-sewn works and prosthetic legs decorated by herself. Beginning with the conflict of wanting to "blend in" with the "ordinary," and questioning "Who am I?" through her work, this book chronicles the artist's growth by collecting objects and self-portraits created over more than a decade since her debut in 2005, up to her latest works.

The text was written by Simon Baker, Director of the European House of Photography, and the design was done by Simon Dara. This book was edited following the first overseas solo exhibition "Broken Heart" held at White Rainbow Gallery (UK).

"GIFT" means "poison" in German. Mari Katayama cannot help but continue to think of happiness and wishes, no matter what kind of poison it becomes and disappears.
