Translucent Libyan Desert Comet/Meteorite Impactite/Tektite Glass from the Great Sand Sea of Egypt near the Libyan Border. Comprised of almost pure terrestrial silica (silicon dioxide) fused from the quartz aggregate of the sand dunes in the region and formed by the intense heat (greater than 1600° F) of a hypervelocity impact of a large meteorite/asteroid around 28.5 million years ago. First discovered by the international scientific community in 1932 but had been used by the Ancient Egyptians as a gemstone. Beware of volcanic pseudo-tektites like Columbianites/Agni Manitites/Staffordites that are comprised of obsidian & formed at much cooler temperatures but sometimes incorrectly claimed as meteoritic in origin.
