This vintage Graflex 3-Cell flash gun is a legendary piece of photographic equipment and pop culture history. Originally manufactured for use with press cameras like the Graflex Speed Graphic, this flash handle was designed to hold D-cell batteries and trigger flashbulbs via a solenoid mechanism and sync cord, illuminating large-format photography scenes with single-use bulbs.
Its iconic chrome tube, clamp assembly and distinctive red button were precisely the features that caught the attention of Lucasfilm prop designer Roger Christian, who used a Graflex unit as the foundation for Luke Skywalker’s original lightsaber in Star Wars: A New Hope. This handle could be modified to further resemble the on-screen weapon; such kits can be purchased online.
