Item code - EH9s. Type - Seam Opal. Location - Lightning Ridge NSW, Australia. Dimensions - 3.84mm x 7.07mm x 1.71mm. Weight - 0.31cts. Shape - Free-form. Visible Colour(s) - Turquoise, Green, Light Blue Fluorescent Green, Teal. Finish - Finely Polished Doublet on Ironstone. Pattern - Moss. Brightness - Subdued/Moderate. Video Link -https://www.instagram.com/charliesopals/reel/DPBb-_KiJ_F/ This stone is a Lightning Ridge opal doublet. A thin layer of gem quality opal is attached to a dark base. This increases the vibrancy of the opal, the darker the base the brighter the opal. This stunning piece has also had the privilege of been attached to some well polished Queensland boulder ironstone, which gives the stone a beautiful finish. This is now ready to be set in to a ring, a pendant, or just to admire as a beautiful keep sake. Opal is best viewed 'moving' in bright sunlight, or bright artificial light. The light/torch on a phone can also be very good, and can reveal colour that you never thought was there without a substantially brighter light source - (opal needs light to diffract) Almost 95 million years ago, Australia's inland sea (Eromanga Sea) dried up and seeped into the ground, taking with it silica rich sand from the surrounding margins. The water filled empty voids and cracks in the host rocks deep beneath ground. Once the water had evaporated, it left behind a gel like substance which over millions of years hardened to form opal. In some cases, that gel like substance formed as precious opal, and some formed as common opal, which is known as ‘potch’ or noble opal. All my photographs are taken under artificial light with an iPhone 15 Pro. No enhancement or filters were used or added, just good angles and close ups (macro) with a mini tripod and a remote.
